Characteristics of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) Rubber
Hits: 792 Time: 2026.07.16
Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is a synthetic rubber with various excellent properties, widely used in fields such as automobiles, construction, wires and cables.

The following are its main characteristics:

Excellent aging resistance
EPDM has excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, and heat resistance, and can be used for a long time at 120 ℃, and briefly or intermittently at 150-200 ℃. By adding anti-aging agents, its usage temperature can be further increased.
Under the conditions of an ozone concentration of 50pphm and a stretching of 30%, EPDM can maintain its integrity for over 150 hours without cracking.

Chemical corrosion resistance
EPDM has good resistance to polar chemicals such as alcohols, acids, bases, oxidants, refrigerants, and detergents, but its stability is poor in lipids and aromatic solvents.
Under the long-term action of concentrated acid, its performance will decrease.

Water vapor and superheated water resistance performance
The water vapor resistance of EPDM is superior to its heat resistance, and there is no significant change in appearance after nearly 100 hours in superheated steam at 230 ℃.
After soaking in superheated water at 125 ℃ for 15 months, its mechanical properties showed minimal changes, with a volume expansion rate of only 0.3%.

Excellent electrical insulation performance
EPDM has excellent electrical insulation performance and corona resistance, and its electrical performance is superior to or close to that of styrene butadiene rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, polyethylene, and cross-linked polyethylene.

Elasticity and low-temperature performance
The elasticity of EPDM is second only to natural rubber and butadiene rubber, and it can still maintain good elasticity at low temperatures.

Low density and high filling capacity
EPDM has a low density and can be filled with a large amount of oil and fillers, thereby reducing the cost of rubber products and compensating for its high raw rubber price.

Poor adhesion
Due to the lack of active groups in the molecular structure of EPDM, its self adhesiveness and inter adhesiveness are poor, and the rubber material is prone to frosting.

Widely used
EPDM is widely used in fields such as automotive sealing strips, radiator hoses, building waterproofing membranes, and wire and cable sheaths.

In summary, EPDM rubber has become an important material in various industrial fields due to its excellent aging resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, and elasticity.
